1200 dead in a population of 1.2 billion or 12,000 perished in a population of 2.8 crore. Ratios do not matter because each life is gifted. But are we seized of the enormous challenge at hand? Climate change is yet merely a good seminar topic but not a subject of focus of the powers that be. India has improved its disaster mitigation preparedness. There is, however, an urgent need to broad base India’s capability to deal with extreme weather conditions, a big emerging threat to life. Many parts of northern India experience extreme cold and heat temperatures causing heavy loss of life annually. With mercury rising, the death toll has already crossed 1200. We all know the misery winter brought this year. Weather is in nobody’s control but damage it causes can be minimized by a proactive well coordinated policy framework.
