Is 90% the new first division in India? The excitement over the ever growing 90% club at 10th and 12th level masks gross ugliness of the current examination system. This has telling impact on the vast mass of students who find themselves at the bottom of the pyramid. The 90% club has become the norm not only at CBSE but almost all major school boards. To attribute it to a sudden rise in credentials of students across India is a blunder. The objective is not to undermine the effort of the high achievers but to be realistic. Ascent on setting high scoring question papers with push for liberal marking is not a panacea to all ills. With 99% cut offs in vogue now, majority of students with 90% marks would fail to gain entry to top Delhi University five colleges. Thereby hangs a tragic tale!
