They say power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Politicians in India do not wait for absolute power to get corrupted absolutely. They thrive in the power trip. Politicians of all hues have actually started exercising their authority illegally. What is shocking is the brazenness with which they now try get away with it. This has made governance a joke. The latest instance of a state Chief Minister, a deputy Chief Minister and a Union junior minister inconveniencing the general public due to the VIP culture has shocked everyone. Down south a senior politician slapping a commuter on board a Metro shows the malaise is wide and deep. A public apology might drown the media outcry but not instill any confidence in the voter. There is need to push for severe penalty including a bar on holding public office again.
