The Yakub Menon hanging has revived the capital punishment debate. Earlier when Afzal Guru was hanged there was call for abolition of capital punishment. The issue was raised and forgotten in the heat of the moment. The capital punishment debate is most welcome for in a democracy every voice must be genuinely heard. China is said to have executed hundreds of suspected terrorists in Xinhua province. But that is another story. Unlike China, though, terror has over the decades bled India grievously. Terror prowls on claiming innocent lives. This should not distract us away from the need for a debate. Both Houses of Parliament must dispassionately debate to settle the issue once for all. To hang or not is indeed a political decision but it is best taken in the interest of the nation as against dynamics of narrow vote bank politics.
