Dengue deaths have come back to haunt India. Traditionally official statistics do not tell the real story. Independent studies have estimated the number of actual cases to be much higher. Obviously, we have failed to learn our lessons. The failure of public health system is easily visible. The relatively less rains this year had given hope that dengue might be better contained this time. Dengue spread again and its fatal consequences have put focus back on our creaking Municipal administration. Municipal bodies are in a fiscal mess with no innovation on revenue generation in face of ever escalating expenditure. The salary expenditure head is the biggest drag on municipalities as respective corporations continue to focus on non core activities like running schools. The other curse plaguing municipal bodies is battle over control between state government and elected representatives manning them.
