Narendra Modi successfully redefined the art of political communication in 2014. A year later he and his government face possibly the worst communications management challenge. As we debate the right and wrong about intelligentsia returning government awards, what is beyond debate is that the government is in for a bad name. To call it a manufactured dissent may win you debating points but public perception management goes well beyond debates either won or lost. Those returning awards in hordes have their own credibility issue to tackle but that is obviously a lesser of an issue than the perceived credibility crisis for the government. Modi has to reinvent himself in so far his communications piece is concerned. This must happen as of yesterday. His communications team is also unequal to the challenge. He needs to hire genuine professional talent rather than have loud mouths scoring self goals.
