Slogans make or mar politicians. Slogans tend to amplify the campaign. Slogan writers are creative people. Those who commission them are wise people who seek to either build a constituency or strengthen it. A dream thus gets easily sold. Smart city slogan in India is one such dream. India is a complex country where you dream relentlessly at times without proper respect for the ground reality. When smart city campaign picked steam, India braved the big Kashmir deluge made worse by ever creaking city civic infrastructure. Kashmir flood tragedy reminded us we had not learnt any lessons from Mumbai deluge a few years ago. Today Chennai, key southern metro, resembles a big ugly nullah. The writing is on the wall: shun sloganeering and to begin with set four big metros basic infrastructure in order. Safety first! Smart city can wait.
