
In perhaps the most definitive consumer friendly decision, the telecom regulator has decided to penalize operators for call drops. The call drop menace has caused huge stress to consumers across India and government has been under tremendous pressure to find a solution. This is indeed a vexed issue and failure to find a solution so far has raised a big question mark over the efficacy of the much boasted Indian telecom story. There are merits in arguments raised by each stakeholder. Tussle between the government and companies over investments and logistics in building the relevant infrastructure persists. The penalty cause would for sure disappoint the industry but consumer interests are above all. Having made a categorical assertion over whose interests matter most to it, government must expeditiously engage with the industry to solve its genuine concerns including clarity over installation of towers
