The media is under unprecedented attack in Uttar Pradesh. The political capital of India is infamous for brushing the media the wrong way. But the brazenness with which the state government has sought to stay a mute spectator has sent shivers down anyone who is wedded to a free speech for a healthy democracy. The barbaric act of burning of a young journalist for his exposure of wrong doing of powers that be is without precedent. The young Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh who got elected on the mandate of ending the “Goonda Raj” in the state has to take personal responsibility when it comes to safety of each citizen in the state. Should he be not in control for whatever reasons, it is high time he steps aside. Killing the messenger is not going to hide some ugly truths.
