It is Indian summer at Wimbledon thanks to three outstanding sports persons-Leander Paes (42), Sania Mirza (28) & Sumit Nagar (17). Performances by these sportspersons point to a new emerging trend in the Indian sporting arena. India is slowly but surely ambling towards seeking excellence in individual sports rather than team sports. Beginning perhaps with Abhinav Bindra, who got India its first individual gold at 2008 Olympics, the individual march has got better and better with passage of time. Name the sport and there is an Indian star shining bright out there: Sania Mirza (Tennis), Mary Kom (Boxing), Saina Nehwal (Badminton), Vijenedra Singh (Boxing), Sushil Kumar (Wrestling), Geeta Phogat (Wrestling), etc. To sustain the trend there is need for a paradigm shift in our sports policy: Treat individual sports and sports persons as the top most priority. Rest will follow. Promise, golden days aren’t far away!
